Different types
of drywall

What is drywall (gyproc) made of?

Gypsum is the material used as the base for drywall, it is made from stone that is over 40 million years old. This stone is called calcium sulfate dihydrate (gypsum). Gypsum is collected in quarries and is crushed then ground, then cooked so that it becomes plaster powder. This powder is mixed with water, among other additives so that it hardens and solidifies. Gypsum panels are then covered with a strong, smooth paper that can be finished.
